The Puzzling World of Winston Breen (3) grades 3-7Ī series you might not have heard of is The Puzzling World of Winston Breen. It was his creative thinking abilities that allowed him to be so successful in solving these mysteries. Each mystery is solved based on a lapse in logic, a piece of knowledge, or an astute observation by the ever-thinking Encyclopedia.

And he made a little coin in the process (25 cents a day plus expenses). Through the 29 books in the series, Encyclopedia was allowed to let his talents fly and to use his intelligence somewhere other than in the classroom. I loved reading about Encyclopedia Brown using his creative thinking skills to solve mysteries that his police chief father could not, or the ones that other kids brought to him in the small office he set up in the family garage. Encyclopedia Brown has been around since I was a kid (yes, that long). My first series choice is near and dear to my heart. These series range from young readers to adults. I chose series because it gives you so many more options to check out these books. With that in mind, I would like to recommend five different book series that portray gifted people using their abilities to be creative. It can be difficult to find a gifted person portrayed as a typical human being using their creative thinking abilities. These gifts are often shown as freakish or with special powers, like in the Harry Potter series. It’s no different for a gifted person: they want to see people who are like them, whether they be awkward, brilliant, or creative. This goes for girls, this goes for black and brown people, and this goes for handicapped folks as well. I also like the covers- each person who the book focuses on appears on the cover, and they are shiny. Yes, it's easy and straightforward- but its geared toward middle school more than high school/young adult and with that in mind, I give this book 4 stars for a great take on a somewhat common idea, well developed characters, and a smooth plot. It is quick and fun with a pretty interesting plot. One girl who felt basically invisible to the world became invisible but some of them are more original, such as being sucked into someone's body but still fully aware of who YOU are all because you felt really sorry for the person. One character can have super strength, but only when he is bullied and on the verge of a breakdown- otherwise, he is scrawny and weak. Most of the powers are common- seeing the future, reading minds- but not all are easily and quickly manifested.

The characters are interesting and are actually developed pretty deeply within each of their own stories/focus. The writing is very simple and straightforward- there are few big vocab words but it still flows nicely. One thing I do like about this series is that each book so far focuses for the most part on one of the nine students but all the students are involved- you learn about each one despite the shifting focus. Kaye plays several different theories into the story- many of them plausible and made me think and consider them before finally revealing which on was correct. The plot of this one was interesting- the gifted students are being taken, one by one, and no one knows why. You certainly need to read the first two books to really get this one but it is written in a way that you could get by without it. They are very quick, very easy reads but do keep me entertained. I have read the first 2 and liked them both. In fact, I think even older elementary kids would enjoy it. Considering this is a middle grade novel (Grades 5-9), I actually really liked this book.
